Ballroom Dancing with Sherman Christensen
Partner Dancing is simply one of the best activities a person can learn to do.
Physically, you will be training in all four of the pillars of bodily health: Strength, Endurance, Flexibility, and Balance. Your posture will improve, as will your ability to lead/follow another person's body movements confidently.
Mentally, you will be challenging your mind memorizing the names and movements of literally hundreds of different dance movements. Memory and directional logic will improve, and though it's not a miracle cure by any means, numerous medical studies have lauded Ballroom Dancing's ability to improve mental faculties in the face of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Socially, you will be in close contact with dozens of people, making connections, friendships, and relationships you will have for life. Plus, you'll never need to shy away from the dance floor at a wedding again!
Sherman has been teaching over 15 styles of Partner Dance for over 15 years, and has never met a student he couldn't teach. About the instructor:
Sherman Christensen's 15 year career teaching Ballroom Dance is the result of both hard work and happy accidents. In High School, Sherman was the WORST dancer in his show choir, relegated to the back row to hide his awkward movements.
Once in college, Sherman got into Tampa, Florida's strangely vibrant Swing Dancing scene, and a chance encounter with a Ballroom Dance Instructor in a Starbucks led him to interviewing with the studio she worked at: Librero's School & Dance Club.
The Libreros brought on the frankly untalented dancer, and trained him mercilessly until he was up to snuff for teaching. This led to what makes Sherman one of the greatest Ballroom Dance Instructors you'll ever have; endless patience with students, and an eye for seeing the smallest technical mistakes and being able to clearly communicate what went wrong. (When you've made every single mistake, you get good at identifying them in others and helping them fix them!)
Finishing his training at Librero's School & Dance Club in Tampa, FL, he's taught in Florida, Texas, and now California where he was employed at Cheryl Burke Dance (of Dancing with the Stars fame) before moving to the Peninsula Family YMCA in San Mateo.
Teaching at The Y gave Sherman a new perspective of how Ballroom Dance can lead to a more holistic and healthy life. Classes are always high energy and lots of fun, and the atmosphere is that of a big dance family that helps each other improve and be the best we can be on and off the dance floor.
